Muhammad Ali
He boasted he was "The Greatest," and in the prime of his charismatic career, many agreed. The sports world is filled with showmen and great athletes, but perhaps never were they better combined than in the young man who began life as Cassius Clay and became a worldwide phenomenon as Muhammad Ali.
The man who bragged about his ability to "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" went from being a curious oddity in the early 1960s to a national villain to an international hero. And now, his body limited by Parkinson's
disease, he reigns as one of the most beloved men on the planet.

Micheal Jordan
As the century draws to a close, Jordan is recognized as an icon. Tall, dark and bald, he is the first man of the planet. The Chicago Bulls guard has the rarest of gifts, the ability to transcend his sport. His fame and skill are intertwined, much as they were in earlier generations for a select few, such as the Babe and Ali. Jordan made himself into a megastar. His burning desire to win, his utter refusal to quit, his desire to carry his team to the mountain top have made him a legend in his time.

Jesse Owens
For most athletes, Jesse Owens' performance one spring
afternoon in 1935 would be the accomplishment of a lifetime. In
45 minutes, he established three world records and tied another.Won four gold medals in the
1936 Olympics.Four
years later, a street in Berlin was renamed in his honor.A decade
after his death, President Bush posthumously awarded Owens the
Congressional Medal of Honor. Bush called his victories in Berlin
"an unrivaled athletic triumph, but more than that, a
triumph for all humanity.

Jackie Robinson
By that standard, few people -- and no athlete -- this century has impacted more lives. Robinson lit the torch and passed it on to several generations of African-American athletes. While the Brooklyn Dodgers infielder didn't make a nation color blind, he at least made it more color friendly. The 6-foot, 195-pound Robinson was the Rookie of the Year and two years later he was MVP. His lifetime average was .311 and he was voted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Jackie Joyner Kersee
She came to dominate the heptathlon, a demanding seven-event
competition that measures speed, strength and stamina. Not only
the possessor of the world record of 7,291 points, she also holds
the next five highest scores. She was the first to register more
than 7,000 points in the event, which consists of the 100-meter
hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meters, long jump, javelin and
800 meters. After gaining an Olympic silver medal in 1984 when she
was edged by less than a second for first, she captured gold at
both the 1988 and 1992 Games. "She's the greatest
multi-event athlete ever, man or woman," said Bruce Jenner,
an expert on multi-events as the 1976 Olympic decathlon champion.

Karrem Abdul-Jabbar
In the NBA, the 7-foot-2 center helped his teams win six
championships (one with the Milwaukee Bucks, five with the Los
Angeles Lakers). When Abdul-Jabbar retired in 1989 after 20
seasons, he left as the league's all-time leader scorer with
38,387 points. He was voted MVP six times and NBA Finals MVP
twice. When Abdul-Jabbar retired in 1989 at age 42, his career
regular-season numbers were 24.6 points per game, 11.2 rebounds,
3.6 blocked shots and a .559 shooting percentage. He was
first-team all-league 10 times and second-team five times. He also holds NBA records for most seasons of 1,000 or more points (19), most minutes played (57,446), and most field goals (15,837). On May 15, 1995, he was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
