Royal Matters

I tried to avoid those "royal matters" for long time for many good reasons. First, at the time of becoming an American citizen Esther surrendered her titles and legions to Ethiopia, follow the law of US naturalization. It wasn't a matter of practicality, but a choice of actual residency. She or I never regreted it. We went to Russia and Ethiopia as American citizens without any intentions to change our status. Our children are born Americans and our endower to keep cultural traditions of both sides of the family has no political intentions.

Second, the royal family issues. They are very confused and unclear. Who is actual head of the Sellassie family is an open question. Although Esther's brother Bekeri was named as a succesor, Esther's cousin Ermias appered in the last year "People" Magazine as the head of the royal family of Ethiopia. The reporter contacted us and was directed to Bekere. There is also prince Jacob in London (son of the Crown Prince).

This issue is getting even more complicated when one thinks about future. Who and how will administer the transitions? The Crown Council (Ermias is a head) and monarharchist party are exoteric organizations. Once in a while they would issue some strange statements (1997 Restoration Call Moa Anbessa), as if the restoration of monarchy in Ethiopia is the immidiate task. The restoration of the family credibility is.

In fact, the family is done very little, if not to say nothing, for the countrary, during last 25 years. Including the preservation of Haile Sellassie legacy. I touched those matters last year describing the goals of the Haile Sellassie Foundation. How much could be done and when?

Finally, about my limitations. Maybe I should say my personal "commitment"... If you read fragments from "H.I.M." -- you know the origins of this and other Sellassie websites. The book I am writing is the beginning and the end of my involvement.
