Islam

Often, I have difficult time deciding where the subjects or topics belong. For instance, I put "Oromo" page in the Politics Directory and perhaps this page should be there as well. Too many cultural issues are politically charged in Ethiopian mind and that is the part of the problem. Culture doesn't operate with "right" or "wrong" -- only with the beauty and the ugly. Politics doesn't understand it. There is a long tradition of misunderstanding of the difference between two states of mind. You can find in any history book references to the "Religious wars" -- when in fact religion is only used for political purpose. Of ocurse, we all know that any religion is dealing with God, not temporary issues, but since the "organized religion" (church) is a body of live people, the border line is easiely crossed.

A war could be incited practically on any subject as long as it turned into a political issue. The most vivid recent example is the war in Kosovo. You hear endless references to "Albanians" and almost never to Muslims. Why? Well, the moment our "careful" media dares to name the religious affiliation of the ethnic Albanians, who are citizens of Yugoslavia, you can get the split in the audience perception. Because we all have our own religious affiliations. The same you might notice in identification of Palestinians as Arabs, not Muslims. Do you see the difference? No?

Maybe the best way to explain it is to let you see it.

Mohammed, you didn't find the answers to your questions on our webpages, because like you we are not politicians. I write about what I know and I do not know anything about the billions of Haile Sellassie. If you searched our site, you should know that I teach at the University of Fairbanks and Esther works as a manager at the local McDonald's. Perhaps, I and you have different impressions of history, but I do not believe that Haile Sellassie's death contributed to peace and prosperity in Ethiopia. On the contrary, you know that Ethiopia and Eritrea are at war and over 40 thousands are dead this Spring. What you're refering to as a religious war has another form -- the civil war. That is what Ethiopia has for 25 years.

Christianity was the main religion of Ethiopia long before Haile Sellassie and I do not believe that the choice of religion makes somebody into an Ethiopian. Besides, we are not Ethiopian citizens and do not belong to any church, those matters are private, very much like your connection with your father.

If you wouldn't mind, I like to post your questions on the page "Islam" (which I plan to make this summer) with my extended comments. I do not think that the problems you are addressing were solved before or after Haile Sellassie and won't be resolved tomorrow.

There are several books on the subject with the better expertise than mine. For your information Haile Sellassie mother was a Muslim and there are many facts in history which have to be brought to light. That is the reason, why I work on the Sellassie websites.

Thanks,
Anatoly
