HIM intro
NotesAn Ethiopian Boyhood"

Of course, Addis lives its own life, different from the rest of Ethiopia...
"New Flower" -- this very feminine name was give to the new capital by Menelik, or his wife. And it does feed the city. Addis saw better times, but maybe the better still yet to come...The texts are in HIM directory, here are the images... History (not hyperlinked yet).
The 20s.
The 30s...
1960s

I left the map of Addis Ababa to be big so you can read it. This page is no Guide to the city by any means. But I haven't find on-line Addis Yellow Pages yet. Such a publication would be usefull for first-time visitors.Addis Ababa (or Abebe) is a new city (one century old) and since 1974 not much was built downtown. Only now you can see a few new hotels, but tourism, which could be Ethiopia's main source of revenue, is not promoted. The country still lives in this shadow of this endless war. Besides, private business is weak. Ethiopians have no money to invest, the foreigners are waiting for better business conditions. Read Addis'95 page on Sellassie Family Web "Addis Ababa Tribune" article (1998); very much what I saw -- BookNotes.
At night, when people are gone, you can see what nature has to offer them. One day they will notice it. Till then Addis Ababa will wait for her undiscovered yet urban beauty.
Some old photos are at 1930 and other photo pages in History Road directory.

Addis is a big city. Bigger than Chicago in terms of population. Perhaps it's over 5 million by now. This is an old photo of the Hall of Africa downtown.
There are some kept-up places -- hotels, main campus of university, Menelik Palace (government), but they all are guarded. Gatekeeper is a profession.
