First, the bad news. 500 visitors/month is good for homepage, not commercial site. I have 500/day and I am not qualified for many advertisers, who are looking for 3-5K/day traffic. I anticipate that this minimus number will grow and placing any commercial links when you do not have heavy traffic is waste of your tiime.

Now, about the size of the imcome you can expect to generate. The click-through (CT) ratio is always low and even with 1K/day you get at best 100 CT, which could generate one sale a day. I guess, you are fine, if you sell your own and expensive product (around $100), but the commission based (affiliations). Even after selling $1000 of books through Amason, you won't make hundred bucks. Thousand in sale means around 50 books. In order to have one thousand dollars a month with Amazon, you have to sell over 500 books each month. any local bookstore can tell you that this is a lot of books.

When you place this Amazon link on your site, I hope that you remember that the same link is placed onthe major search engines with millions of visitors each day.

Well, there are good news, too.
Big numbers theory doesn't rule the market. There is another factor known as "loyalty."

If I have a choice to buy from Amazon on Lycos and Amazon from my own site, where do you think I will be shopping? Why you are on this page, reading?

My friend, the content is the king. People do come for content -- that is why they use those search engines in the first place. But your content must be specialized and broad enough at the same time that your site will have this "critical mass"! Very tricky -- and if you know how to outsmart Medison Avenue, you are fine again. Most likely they would love have you on their staff.

So, how do you develop this narrow-broad market?
