It was a dream. To build the Sellassie Cyber Museum... and the Sellassie Cyber University. It took years to get the Sellassie WWW pages to where they are now. The sound task is even more ambitious.

Cyber classes?

Addis Ababa University is not ready for the new brave electronic age. Maybe now they some computors outside of the main administration offices.

Yes, the Addis Tribune is in cyber space, but this is the only Ethiopian newspaper which has a website.

I believed then and I believe now that the way to get out of the time corner is to go global. We were in Ethiopia when there was a buzz about Ethiopians returning back... I do not hear it anymore. It's difficult for the Irish or Italians to go back after establishing themselves in the America. But I thought that maybe the "Indian model" could work.

Academics? Academics do need a wave. Bold moves, strong leaders, momentum...

Looks like Ethiopia like the rest of Africa fell through the cracks of the last century. The paradox: interest in the past is generated by the future. What your future, Ethiopia?

Cyber Classes

Right now I would like to know the interests of our visitors. (That is why you see so many polls and survey on our pages). Our immidiate task is limited, we would like to focus only on the subjects which are not taught usually. If you are interested to know what the traditional Ethiopian Stiudies can offer, ckeck the Academic Links page.

Ethiopian Orthodoxy

Why the religion? It is a question of Cultural Studies area. Ethiopian Orthodox doctrine is old and complex. Without understanding the basic concepts, it is difficult to understand the history of Ethiopia.

[ "Religions" pages are not collected together -- more in CULTURE directory ]

Ethiopia: 20th Century

Most of the material on our websites covers this century. Ethiopia's transition into modern age can explain the past and the future of the country. Read History!

Virtual Theatre
Anatoly Antohin, Associate Professor, University of Alaska Fairbanks.

PS. I teach Theatre & Film full-time and direct actual (with live actors) shows. Ethiopian students at Sellassie Cyber University have to get used to be virtual!

ArtDirectory I am not aware of any Ethiopian Study classes online, not even from Upenn or Berkley U (two biggest programs in US). It probably will take 5-10 years before the Ethiopian online teaching and learning could take place.

There are Amharic sofware programs you can buy. There are some big websites on Ethiopia (many new Ethiopian Americans are computer professionals). The commerce as usual leads.

After the end of the Cold War the American interest in Ethiopia is not strong. I suspect that the conflict with Islamic terrorism could bring interest in Ethiopia back again. But this depends on too many factors. The major one is the goverment of Ethiopia. (Read Politics pages).

No, Ethiopia won't return to big politics big time, but could play a serious role in regional politics (Sudan, Somalia, Yemen). The problem is that there are no statesmen or diplomats to bring attention to the Horn of Africa. How much is done in ten plus years since the fall of Derg?

What to expect in the next ten years?

It's economy, stupid -- say Americans. In Africa it's also the politcis. The interest of the world, "theirs" not Ethiopian interests.

It's almost ten years since were in Addis in 1995. Ethiopia should and could be major global tourist attraction. What will it take to make it a reality? First, peace and stability. Not the wars.

Second, the attitute.

Acting in Film Analysis class *

Film Acting Pages: actors

2004: I do not know when I will have time to write about "acting in movies" -- here is a short list of actors I refer to in Film Analysis class.

Acting is a part of "mise-en-scene" in many textbooks (need definition).

Maybe I will put my comments to the titles and actors later. Anatoly

PS. Watch the movies on your own, we don't do in class.

Film Acting

Nicholson There a short list of titles I show the segments in class, when we get to Acting; here are the samples.

There are other movies with Jack Nocholson could be recommended (use Amazon suggestions).

[ I am not mentioning European film actors here. ]

See Acting I, II, III and Film Directing pages.
